Old Masters Drawing
Technique
We do not address the old masters' drawing techniques as they relate to materials. Not knowing nor being able to obtain their types or qualities of materials makes it impractical. We consider only drawing techniques that apply to materials that are readily available . We use the simplest and most cost effective materials: common drawing pencils, vine charcoal and easily obtainable paper. Expense is added when it is required to satisfy the desired aesthetics.
More to the point, drawing with authentic techniques or so called techniques of the masters without the knowledge of how they actually drew is misleading.
Their techniques either generic or individual, were designed to facilatate their method of drawing and were applicable to enhance how they drew. So understanding the master's technigues is important if one understands their drawing mechanics first. We understand there are other consideration as in permanency and tailoring a material's effect to one's own aesthetics. But we choose not to mislead or confuse the draughtswomen or draughtsman as to the essentials of drawing.
